I've decided I'm going to give in to my total geekiness and try to write down some thoughts each week about Lost. I'm hopelessly addicted. Anyway, if don't watch or like Lost, or haven't seen this week's episode, you should stop reading about ... now.
Last night's episode was ... meh. It proved some of my previous theories/assumptions but really didn't give us a whole lot of new information.
Confirmed: The Ajira flight landed on the runway on the Hydra island, which is the same runway Kate and Sawyer were helping build in Season 3.
I had totally forgotten that they were building a runway, but they were. Which begs the question - did Ben know that the Ajira flight was going to land on the island, and would need the runway? Is that the reason he was having it built? Or was it just a coincidence?
Confirmed: The baby is Ethan.
There were lots of theories on this one - it was Desmond, Faraday, Ethan, Goodwin, etc. Interesting that it turned out to be Ethan - we know he ends up with "the Hostiles," so it looks like we'll get into more of his background, and learn how and why he left Dharma.
Confirmed: Radzinsky is kind of a nut.
Although we still don't know what made him go really nuts and shoot himself in Desmond's hatch. Maybe he was the one who came up with the whole concept of the Swan station - which eventually ended up driving him mad. Interesting.
Confirmed: Faraday isn't "there" anymore.
Whatever "there" means. Is he off time traveling somewhere? Dead? Just off the island? Crazy? Time will tell ... (ha! no pun intended.) There's a theory floating around out there that he turns out to be Jacob. We shall see.
Confirmed: Sawyer/LaFleur pretty much rules.
He can still think on his feet like a conman, coming up with the idea of making the time travelers into new recruits in about a tenth of a second and then orchestrating the plan nearly flawlessly. He made Jack into a janitor, based on his "aptitude tests" - hilarious, and classic Sawyer. He came up with at least a temporary solution to the Sayid problem. He also managed to stay away from relationship-killer Kate, at least for now. From the looks of next week's preview, that drama is pretty much set to boil over in the next episode, but I'm glad that she at least didn't start messing everything up already. I will NOT be happy if she ends up with Sawyer - he and Juliet are too great together, and Kate is, let's face it, pretty much the angel of death when it comes to relationships.
Doc Jensen of the Entertainment Weekly Lost blog had a theory a few weeks back that Season 5 is mirroring Season 2, which I am seeing more and more. Especially this week, with Sayid being locked in the closet in the hatch (ala "Henry Gale" being locked in the armory in Season 2), and with Younger Ben bringing him food (like Jack ended up doing for "Henry" in Season 2). Season 5 is also obviously shaping up to be a Dharma-heavy season, and Season 2 was when we learned nearly everything we know about Dharma. Does this mean Season 6 is going to mirror Season 1? I've wondered for awhile now whether the final shot of the final episode of the series (which the writers claim they already have totally planned out) will be the same shot as the very first one of the series - a close-up of Jack's eye as he wakes up in the jungle. Will the Losties somehow influence their future/time so that they come full circle at the end, and crash on the island all over again?
The time-travel is stuff is hard to wrap one's mind around, but I think that will maybe be simplified in upcoming episodes. Sawyer hinted at it in this one when he said that Faraday had "all sorts of ideas about what we can and can't change". We know Faraday previously said that nothing can be changed, and "what happened happened, no matter what". But is that really true, if Widmore was able to have Alex killed? Was that the "rule" that he broke?
Oh, Lost ... for every explanation there's a million more questions. Love it!
